After earning a master’s degree in social work at Columbia University, she worked as a social worker for the Red Cross and the Jewish Board of Family and Child Services before earning certification to practice as a psychiatric social worker. She graduated from Simmons College in 1944. She was born on June 13, 1924, to Sara and Morris Kerness, both immigrants from Kiev. John was preceded in death by his parents, Julian and Erna Shipley his wife, Joan Lesman Shipley daughter, Katherine Alexandra Shipley and sister ,Marianne Buchwalter. John is survived by his children, David, Ann (Ben) and Thomas (Megan) and his grandchildren, Rosa, Joe, Owen, Fiona, Alex and Henry. John Shipley, z”l, passed away on May 2, 2023. In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter, Bat-Ami Frankel son, Boaz and two grandchildren. He was a key member of Congregation Kesser Israel for decades, reading the Torah on every Shabbat and on holidays.
